Beauty: Where do you draw the line on holiday prep?

Oh for the days when I could get away with just some big sunnies and jazz hands

It's exactly 24 days and counting until I jet off for my first two week summer holiday in I don't know how long. Over the past few years, I've grown pathological about taking extended breaks from work. This year, I'm issuing myself with a stern 'eff it' order and plan to spend 14 nights enjoying sun, sea and fat dose of peace and quiet. I've earned it!

But before that mellow fortnight commences, I'm stuck with a dilemma: how much is too much when it comes to holiday preparation? In my 29 years, I've come to realise a few things:

  • no matter how many bikinis I take, I will probably only wear my favourite one. I take two just in case of lycra failure
  • as much as I want a tan, I don't ever get one
  • I can't fight the fact that in the heat, my hair (without a permanent blow dry) will do whatever the hell it pleases. And let me tell you, it ain't pretty

So, here's my issue. Yesterday I made a list of the treatments I would like before I go on holiday. Indulge me a moment:

  • Permanent blow dry (PBD)
  • Haircut
  • Eyebrow shape and tint
  • Bikini wax
  • Pedicure
  • Shellac manicure
  • Possibly an eyelash tint
Then I added it up and realised I would be lucky to get change from £500 from all this. £500. There is no way in the world I can justify that kind of money for a couple of weeks where I'll spend most of my time with my face in front of my Kobo, and I wondered when convenience beauty became such a drain on our resources. I can still just about justify my PBD given the amount of time and the level of hair-related trauma it saves me, but in the pursuit of looking natural and not having to spend precious beach time on my extended beauty routine, I could be parting with the cost of another holiday. Madness or what?

I'm starting to wonder whether to try it all myself, including having a play with Phyto's Relaxer kit (although I'm terrified it's going to dry out my hair). I've read countless reviews of the Charles Worthington straightening kit and know it's not for me (despite having one in my cupboard), but everything else, from brows to toes can be done at home and for a significantly lower investment. So, tomorrow I'm on a review-reading, youtube video watching mission, in the hope that I can convert my bathroom into my very own holiday salon and come out looking primped and polished, rather than some dye-streaked, broken-haired disaster.

I'm keen to know where you stand on pre-holiday prep! Are you a slave to the salon or a DIY devotee?

  1. Me and my friends went to Ibiza a few weeks ago for 4 days and I decided to skip all this stuff because it was a short break and I'm skint - my friends all had lash extensions, minx toenails, shellac on their nails etc etc.

I think for my hol to Mexico I'm going to go for getting my hair done, shellac mani and pedi, bikini wax and possibly lash extensions. I could go for so much more though! It is ridiculous to spend so much money when 90% of the time I'll be by the pool/sea.
